God’s Blessing and New Provisions for Noah

ZAC POONEN: This is chapter 9. We concluded our last study in the last verse of chapter 8, where God promised that as long as the earth remained, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, and day and night would never cease. And then after Noah came out of the ark, we read here, God blessed Noah and his sons. It says in Genesis 8:21 that the Lord smelled a sweet aroma because Noah had offered a burnt offering.

It’s the first thing he thought of, unlike the nine lepers who were healed. The first thing he thought of, like that one thankful leper, was that first of all, he needed to give thanks. We thought of the long period he’d been through in the ark, and it says God remembered Noah. How easy it is after we’ve been through a period of testing, and when we come out of it, for us to forget to thank God for His care over us.

God blessed him and said, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth, and the fear of you and the terror of you shall be on every beast of the earth, and on every bird of the sky. With everything that creeps on the ground and all of the fish of the sea into your hand, they are given. Every moving thing that is alive shall be food for you.”

The Permission to Eat Meat

“I give all to you as I gave the green plant.” From Adam up to Noah, man was called by God to be a vegetarian. God gave Adam only the plants to eat. Of course, it’s quite likely that the sons of Cain and others who disobeyed God in other things probably disobeyed God and ate meat as well.
