TRANSCRIPT:

The Church and Its Shepherd

Let’s turn to God’s Word in Paul’s first letter to Timothy. The two letters to Timothy and Titus are among the closing letters that Paul wrote towards the end of his life. And all three of them, which were the last letters that he wrote, 2 Timothy being the last, are related to the servant of the Lord, the servant in the church. And the first letter to Timothy, we could say the subject is the church and its shepherd.

The attitude that the shepherds and leaders of the church should have, the way they should live and the way they should conduct church matters. And it’s very interesting to see that these last three letters of Paul have this as their theme. So Paul sort of sensed that his time on earth was gradually getting over and he was very concerned that the next generation should have the same principles and values that he himself had as a servant of the Lord.

And in the earlier letters, he spoke more about the Christian life, but in these last three letters, he speaks more about the next generation having the same values, giving them warnings, prophetic warnings about how things are going to be and to prepare themselves for that future time.

And it’s very interesting to see that if you see it in that context, that Paul is unburdening his heart to Timothy and read this letter with that in mind, and you’ll see some of the most important things that a servant of the Lord must bear in mind.
