The Promise and Man’s Attempt to Help God

ZAC POONEN: In our last study, we considered how God had promised Abraham that He would give him a child. This is the first time that Abraham understood, as we read in Genesis 15:4, that he would have a son through his own body who would be his heir. Of course, earlier on, even in chapter 12, he had said that through his seed, the nations would be blessed. But it became more specific here in Genesis 15 that it was not going to be an adopted child. It was going to be a child of his own.

And then God made a covenant with Abraham as we read in Genesis 15:18, with the symbol of death, of animals slain. Then we come to chapter 16 verse one. You can imagine this man who was so delighted that he was going to have a son. God had made a promise and it says he said, “Amen” to that promise. And then he thought now it’s difficult for Sarah to have a son.

She’s old. She hadn’t had children for many years. So he thought the only way was to take another wife. And there we have a picture of how when man gets a promise from God, his first step is usually to say, “Now how can I help God fulfill His promise?” It’s a picture of leaning upon the arm of flesh instead of leaning upon God.

You know that wonderful verse which says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding.” That teaches us that one of the greatest enemies of faith is our own understanding. And that’s why the cleverer we are, the more difficult it is to have faith.
