ZAC POONEN: Let’s turn back to Genesis chapter two where we were looking at those last few verses of the chapter in our last study. We see here that in verse twenty-one, the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept. This was a picture of that deep sleep of death that God himself caused to fall upon Jesus Christ on the cross for our sins. And from his side, like from Adam’s side, God took a rib and made a woman. From the side of Christ, he has formed a church.

But it is also in its original setting, a picture of the relationship between man and woman in marriage, and all who are married must never forget these important verses from twenty-one to twenty-five. I believe these are very, very important verses for married people because here in the Bible are the only verses in the whole Bible with a description of man and woman in a world without sin. Once you enter chapter three, you see quite a different relationship. But here you see marriage as God intended it to be, and that is a tremendous example for all of us who are married and a challenge for us to consider it carefully.

Here, God was trying to teach for all generations that a man must consider his wife as someone taken out from his side, bone of his bone, as he said in verse twenty-three, and flesh of his flesh. Very important to see that. She was taken out of Adam’s side from near his heart, so that he would always place her in his heart.
