Introduction to 2 John

Let’s turn now to the word of God in the second letter of John. The second letter of John is a very brief letter, and there are two things he speaks about in this brief letter. One is obeying God’s commandments and warning against false teachers. He writes it to what he calls here “the chosen lady,” “The elder,” that is John, “to the chosen lady and her children.”

Now that could have been a godly sister, or it could have been a church whom he calls the chosen lady and her children. Whichever it is, it could be a sister too, maybe a widow who had God-fearing children, and he writes a letter of encouragement. But it could be also to a church because there are a number of things written there which all churches need to take heed to.

Walking in Truth and Love

And he says in verse 4, “I was very glad to find some of your children walking in truth just as we have received commandment from the Father.” That’s a great testimony when a woman has been able to bring up her children to walk in the truth. And verse 5, he says, “Now I am asking you, not as though I am writing a new commandment, but that we love one another.” This is John’s great theme. You notice how it comes through in all his writings: love, love, love, even in John’s gospel.

John’s Perspective on Christendom

And as I said, when we see this is John looking at the decline of Christendom and seeing how everything has fallen apart in most places, very few churches standing up for the truth, even in Revelation chapter 2 and 3, there were only two out of seven churches standing for the truth.
