TRANSCRIPT:

Understanding God’s Word

Let’s turn now to God’s Word and to the Gospel of John, as with the other Gospels. We look at the first few sentences to see what he’s talking about, and here we read of something that is even earlier than Genesis chapter 1, verse 1. This is actually the first verse of the Bible. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” A number of things we read there.

We know that the Word refers to Jesus Christ because later on it says in verse 14 that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. And it’s very clear here in this verse that Jesus Christ is God. He was God from all eternity. He was God when He walked on the earth in the flesh, and He is God today. That’s why we worship Him. That’s why we pray to Him.

And that’s why when people worshiped Him on earth, He accepted that worship. No angel could do that. No man could do that. He accepted it. And why is He called the Word? See, if I stand here and think my thoughts, you can never know what I’m thinking. When I put my thoughts into words, you understand me. If God was in heaven or He came in spirit form, we would never understand Him.

The Simplicity of the Bible

But He came in the form of Jesus as a man so that we could understand Him just like my words help you to understand my thoughts. So that’s why He’s called the Word, the expression of God.
